Ostentation as a Requisite for Modern Work?

In a recent article (link below) from The Economist, the headline states:

The rise of performative work

It’s not what you do. It’s how ostentatiously you do it

The article discusses how remote work demands employees to be performative – to look like they’re working.

Let’s take the premise – It’s not what you do. It’s how ostentatiously you do it.

My response: yes and no.

For example…

My creative work on YouTube ironically says no. As a creator people aren’t looking for ostentation. They want 3 things: entertainment, information, and authenticity.

However, my marketing work suggests yes…people are attracted to brands that are amicable and familiar. In the workplace, people respect others who appear to be productive.

That means showcasing your work in all the right places. To some, that means ostentation. To others it means, matching your work with your image.

But in a practice sense, it’s just about getting to know you and your work.
