Strength isn’t found in the ability to stop the storm, but in the ability to control his reaction to it.
Imagine a seasoned sailor, charting a course across the ocean. He studies the meticulously updated weather reports, consults the most advanced forecasts, and preps his vessel based on every piece of available information. The prediction is clear skies, following winds—a perfect passage.
He embarks, confident in his preparations and the data.
But a few days out, the unpredictable happens (such as this time when I sailed in a Tropical Storm). A rogue squall line, unforeseen by any model, barrels down. The clear skies turn to bruised purple, the following winds become a violent headwind, and the calm seas transform into a churning, threatening chaos. His perfectly planned passage is now a miserable, even terrifying, battle against the elements.
The external circumstances have turned brutally against him. He can’t control the storm. He can’t command the winds to cease or the waves to calm.
What then?
“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
– Marcus Aurelius
Our sailor’s strength isn’t found in his ability to stop the storm, but in his ability to control his reaction to it.
Does he succumb to panic, letting the fear overwhelm his judgment?
Or does he focus his mind on what he can control: his seamanship, the integrity of his rigging, his resolve to navigate through the chaos?
Life, much like that ocean passage, often throws unexpected storms our way. A project goes sideways, a relationship hits rough waters, a market shifts unexpectedly.
We plan, we prepare, we use all the data, but external events remain, by definition, outside our ultimate control.
The power isn’t in preventing the storm, but in how you steer your mind through it.
It’s about choosing your response, focusing your internal resources, and finding the calm within the chaos, even when everything around you screams otherwise.
What unexpected “weather” are you currently facing?
And where are you choosing to focus your power?
